Towpath Marathon Aid Station Captain and Crew Needed - October 10th

Hi SERC Runners,

Looking for a way to give back to the running community this fall?

Bill Montville (The Towpath Volunteer Coordinator) and Tim Donovan (RD) are in need of someone to take over this water stop for the Towpath Marathon October 10, 2010. The team of volunteers need to be able to hike about 1.5 miles on the towpath to the station and they need to be available to mix up the jugs and get the table set up etc and hand out water for the duration of the marathon.

Towpath is the week before my marathon this year and I won't be able to work/captain the aid station.

The station is in between Boston Store and Lock 29.

Please email Bill at: freespirit1@sbcglobal.net if you can help out!

Pass on to anyone that might be interested. Ideally you'd want 8-10 people.

If for some reason Bedford High is out of order we will try Heskett Middle School. Sorry for the last minute info! It was a fabulous day for SERC runners in Boston this year!

Highlights include Mark Godale taking the top SERC runner spot in 2:49:20.

Jessica Pickana led the women in her 2nd marathon with a personal record time of 3:04:15 which was also good enough for top Ohioan!

Barb Broad ran an 8 minute PR coming in 4th in her age group (the three women ahead of her were all 55).

Susan Bohinski ran something like a 40 minute PR in 3:12:56 placing 9th in her age group.

Barb, Susan, Eileen, and Dawn made up the 4th fastest masters women team, about an hour ahead of the next team!

Wyatt Hornsby won the Mohican Trail 100 Mile Run in hot, wet conditions, with a time of 19:52. According to Tim Clemet, who ran with him for the last 8 miles, Wyatt finished strong. I don't have any further details, but I am sure Wyatt will be posting a full report on his blog There are No Limits, once he catches up on his sleep. Steve Godale achieved a major milestone, completing his 10th Mohican to become a member of the 1000 mile club. I have heard there is a special belt buckle to commorate that...can't wait to see it. In the 50 mile event, Dawn Malone took 2nd female. I am sorry that I don't have times for Dawn and Steve, they are not posted yet. Congratulations Dawn, Steve, and Wyatt!

Just passing along info about the Cleveland Premiere of Running the Sahara on February 18th at 7 pm. Details in flyer form and via text below. I am planning to go and hope to see some other locals there!

NEHST Studios is hosting a special premiere screening of the film "Running the Sahara" in Cleveland. "Running the Sahara" is a documentary narrated and produced by Oscar winner Matt Damon, directed by Oscar winner James Moll, and featuring music by Grammy winner Wyclef Jean. "Running the Sahara" follows three ultra-marathoners on their 111-day, 4,300-mile attempt to run across Africa's Sahara Desert. A special one-night benefit premiere of this feature documentary will take place at the Tower City Cinemas in Cleveland on Wednesday, February 18 at 7 p.m.

Just a post to share a note from Vivian to say that Jacob Berkman, Marc's son, has been running up a storm!

He ran the Cleveland Turkey Trot and his results were: 71st overall; 8th in 30-34; 31:46

He is planning to run his 5th marathon on Jan. 11 at Disneyworld in Orlando hoping to BQ. He missed Boston by 5 minutes at the San Francisco marathon. Disney doesn't have those hills so he is very hopeful.

2008 was a great summer for sports’ fans.
World records tumbled at the Beijing
Olympics. Usain Bolt shattered both the
100m and 200m world records, knocking
tenths of a second off each. People have
been getting faster and faster over the last
few decades, which made marathon runner
Mark Denny, from Stanford University,
wonder whether last century’s massive
increase in population could account for
these dramatic improvements. He also
wondered whether there are absolute limits
on running speeds and, if so, how close are
we to them? Suspecting that there are,
Denny decided to scrutinise the running
performances of humans and two other
famous racing species, dogs and
thoroughbred horses, to find how close
modern runners are to their species’ peak
performances (p. 3836).
Having found records dating back to the
1920s for dogs and the 19th century for
humans and thoroughbreds, Denny looked
to see whether there were any clear trends;
had any of the species’ performances
already levelled off? Plotting the annual top
running speeds for all three species over the
years, it was clear that racing horses and
dogs have already reached a plateau. There
has been no improvement in the
thoroughbred’s speed in the Kentucky
Derby since the 1940s and two other major
US races since the 1970s, while dogs’
performances also levelled out in the 1970s.
The increasing dog and thoroughbred
populations hadn’t improved the animals’
performances. However, ‘chance might still
turn up a faster animal,’ says Denny and he
predicts that thoroughbreds could improve
their top speeds by as much as 1% in the
2012m Kentucky Derby, eventually
peaking at a top speed of just over 17ms–1.
For humans the results were complicated by
the different distances that people race.
Looking at the speeds of male race winners
through the years, it seems as if men still
haven’t reached their top speeds at any
distance and Denny predicts that male 100m
sprinters could one day get the record down
to an incredible 9.48 s, running 0.23ms–1
faster than Usain Bolt’s current world record
of 9.69 s. Meanwhile, female sprinters’ top
annual speeds levelled off in the 1970s,
suggesting that any improvement in their
speed was not due to a population increase.
However, Denny suspects that female
sprinters have room for improvement too,
and predicts that they could eventually
knock more than 0.4 s of the current 100m
world record to cover the distance in 10.19 s.
Looking at marathon runners, Denny
predicts that males could cut the current
world record, held by Haile Gebrselassie,
by between 2min7s and 4min23s. And
when he calculates the top speed that a
human female marathon runner could
achieve, Denny suspects that women could
eventually cross the 42,195 m finishing line
in 2h12min41s. He adds that Paula
Radcliffe’s current world record of
2h15min25s is very close to his average
prediction for the maximum marathon
speed and suspects that female marathon
runners could be the first group to approach
his predictions and test whether they hold.
Denny is pleased to have shown that it is
possible to calculate the absolute limits to
speed of running animals ranging from
humans to thoroughbred horses. However,
he emphasises that we have no idea what
aspect of physiology restricts runners’
performances, and is keen to find out what
will prevent future gold medal winners
from breaking Denny’s Limits.

Are there absolute limits to the speed at which animals canrun? If so, how close are present-day individuals to these limits?I approach these questions by using three statistical modelsand data from competitive races to estimate maximum runningspeeds for greyhounds, thoroughbred horses and elite human athletes.In each case, an absolute speed limit is definable, and thecurrent record approaches that predicted maximum. While allsuch extrapolations must be used cautiously, these data suggestthat there are limits to the ability of either natural or artificialselection to produce ever faster dogs, horses and humans. Quantificationof the limits to running speed may aid in formulating and testingmodels of locomotion.

Towpath Marathon Volunteers Still Needed

I still could use a few more volunteers! If you are running this race and have a spouse or child old enough to help please let me know. This weekend is a busy one and I am having trouble lining up 10 people.

Details Below:
Thank you so much to all of you who have volunteered to help at the Towpath marathon aid station near Boston Store for the 10k and marathon. Race is October 12th and starts at 8 AM so we need to be at the Boston Store overflow lot around 7:30 to give us time to get to the aid station and set up which is about 1.5 miles walk down the towpath.

I still could use a few more volunteers! If you are running this race and have a spouse or child old enough to help please let me know. This weekend is a busy one and I am having trouble lining up 10 people.

Note that this is the first time I have worked a marathon aid station, it is obviously a bit different than an ultra station! If any of you have done this before and have an idea of how long it takes to get set up please let me know! I made my current estimates based on what the race told me.

I would like to start pouring water/gatorade by 8 AM at the latest. If you plan to jog to the aid station it will likely take you 10-15 minutes to get from the parking lot to there. I walked it and it took me 25 minutes. Our aid station is on the towpath about 1.5 miles south of Boston Store. (towards the highway bridge and pine lane) We are just past the long boardwalk section of the towpath. Please let me know if you don't know where this is. If we can all arrive as a group at 7:30 this will guarantee we all get to the right place.

The station in approximately mile 2 of the marathon and it is approximately mile 4.5 of the 10k. We are also the 10k turn around. Likely we will have some overlap of the two races. Our primary goals are to keep water and gatorade filled and passed out to runners, as well as make sure that all 10k runners turn around and head back to Boston Store.

Once that traffic clears we will have to wait for the lead marathon runners to come back through. We will be approximately mile 14 on the way back (I am waiting for details on exact miles from the race).

My best guess on times will be (I will adjust after I get confirmed mileage from the race and take a look at least years splits):
Leave cars between 7:30 and 7:45.
Start pouring cups between 7:45 and 8 AM.
First marathon runner arrives approximately 8:10 AM-8:15 AM, last marathon runner goes through first time around 8:30 AM.
First 10k Runner arrives approximately 8:20 AM, Last 10k runner hits turn around approximately 9:20 (based on a 20 minute pace)
First Marathon Runner hits the aid station at mile 14 around 9:10 AM (based on 2:45 finishing time)
Last Marathon Runner hits the aid station at mile 14 around 11:15 AM (based on 6 hour cut off pace)

RRCA National Awards

SERC is not a member of RRCA as we don't currently hold any races but the email below was sent to us. Feel free to read if you know anyone that is in an RRCA club that you feel should be nominated for their national awards.

I know that some of you are not members of the RRCA. But you may know of
someone who is a member of the RRCA and deserves recognition. The
nomination forms can be found at http://www.rrca.org/services/awards/

The RRCA is accepting nominations for the 2008 RRCA National Grassroots
Running Awards.

Nominations will be collected for all categories, and the nominations should
be submitted to the National Office by 5:00 PM Eastern on November 1, 2008
(NOTE: the deadline for website nominations is January 1st). The period of
performance for the individual being nominated should be September 1, 2007
through August 31, 2008.

Individuals interested in serving on one of the award selection panels
should contact Jessica Sleight at office@rrca.org by September 30, 2008.

In case anyone is interested, the first SERC member to participate in the Western States 100 was John Lehrer, who lived on Summit Street, two houses east of the intersection of North Main and Summit streets in Chagrin Falls. John ran the "100" in 1979 after he had moved to Mountain View, CA. He was most happy about making the under-24 hour cutoff for the silver buckle finisher’s award. He was an assistant editor to Runners World when it was a stand-alone publication run by its founder Bob Anderson.

RUN AMERICA FILM

I'm Charlie Engle and I want you to run with me across America! I'm prepping for an exciting project that runners all over the country are participating in. We briefed Jean Knaack, Executive Director of the Road Runners Club of America – who wanted us to speak directly to you.

Nehst Studios is producing the feature film Running America – me and Marshall Ulrich will be running from San Francisco to New York in June, date TBD. We would like runners across the country to join us for a mile, then drop back and let another group run. But you may run as long as you like. We want 5 runners per mile – there's room for 15,000!

Here's how to get your members involved –

- Check out the project and the route at www.runningamerica08.com You may sign up there. There is a nominal registration fee of $3.95 which covers the application, release, and casting expense.

- You may forward this email and the attached press release to your membership list.

- You may post the information at meeting places and running stores.

- The press release will be posted on the National website, and you may also place it on your local site.

- Runners not close to the route have already chosen to travel to run with me – chapters both near and far from the run are welcome to participate.

We know this will be a history-making run. Our last project, Running the Sahara – in which I and other runners crossed Africa, was made into a feature documentary with Oscar-winner Matt Damon narrating. The film will be released late Summer to mid-Fall. I look forward to seeing Road Runners all across America! The run itself will also be raising money and awareness for a number of causes, to be announced soon. Thanks.

Livestrong on Tuesday May 13th

Lucas Walters (the one on the right with the "fro"), a Medina cross country team member is holding a Livestrong run Tuesday night on May 13th to raise money and awareness for testicular cancer. Lucas came back from testicular cancer last year to race on the Medina boys varsity cross country team which won states and went on to team nationals.
